Market Loss Assistance Program Postponed Until February 1

Source: US Apple Association

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) today informed our association that it is postponing implementation of the $100 million market loss assistance payment program for apple growers until February 1. The sign-up period was to have commenced January 18, according to a news release issued by outgoing Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman on December 5, 2000.

The U.S. Apple Association (USApple) is extremely disappointed by USDA's decision to delay the sign-up period for this assistance program, particularly given the dire economic conditions confronting our nation's apple growers and Secretary Glickman's previous commitment to begin the sign-up period on January 18.

USApple will work with incoming Agriculture Secretary Anne Veneman to ensure the timely implementation of this critical assistance program for apple growers. USApple will inform our industry's state and regional associations of the program's specific details as soon as they become available.

Hal Willson Medical Update

Our thoughts and prayers are with Hal Willson and his family. We received word that Hal suffered a possible stroke on Wednesday following a presentation at the Pesticide Application Training session in Perrysburg. Hal has not regained consciousness and remains in very serious condition at St. Luke's hospital in Maumee. His wife Sally is with him, along with their sons. We wish the best for the Willson family during this very difficult time.
